About Pastor Dave Calhoun
Q. When did you come to Parkway and what events led you here?
A.
We started coming regularly in early 2001, not long after Pastor Jeff’s arrival.
Q. Where have you come from? What are some of your previous ministry experiences?
A.
I was born in central Florida, and at the age of six, we moved to Salisbury, NC. In my early teens we moved to Weslaco, TX right on the Mexico border and were involved with missions work until going to Hobe Sound Bible Academy in my junior year of High School. I Met Sybil in our first year of college there and in 92’ moved to Roanoke area. I taught middle school Sunday School at Shenandoah Baptist and at Mineral Springs Baptist church before attending PHOP.

Q. Tell us about your family.
A.
Sybil is an RN and works as Cardiac Dept manager at Bedford Carilion Hospital. She leads singing and kid’s care at La Mision Hispana. Josh recently graduated from PCA and leads music at La Mision Hispana and helps lead teen worship at Eastlake Community Church. He plans to attend Regent University this fall to pursue a Law degree. Caleb is 10 years old and assists at La Mision Hispana. He is student council treasurer at Mineral Springs Christian School. Caleb will begin 6th grade this fall at PCA.
Q. What are your major responsibilities at Parkway? (Tell us what you do).
A.
I pastor PHOP’s Hispanic Ministry church plant, La Mision Hispana.

Q. What excites you most about your ongoing ministry here?
A.
PHOP’s continued support enables this ministry to expand in spite of a difficult economic situation for most of our Hispanic congregants. PHOP’s tremendous mission’s emphasis helps in understanding the needs of the Hispanic ‘Mission’ versus the traditional American church plant.

Q. Name one highlight over the past five years. Your favorite Parkway moment.
A.
In 2003, during Dr. James Keaton’s message I felt a definite call to pastor Hispanics. God has confirmed His calling many times since!

Q. What are your hobbies/interests? What are some things you especially like to do in your free time?
A.
I enjoy golf, reading, hiking with family and vacations to Florida.
Q. What is your favorite food?
A.
Latino cuisine

Q. What book(s) have you read recently that you'd like to recommend? Do you have a favorite book?
A.
I highly recommend Bruchko a missionary story by Bruce Olsen. The New King James Bilingual Bible is more and more becoming my favorite read.

Q. What do you anticipate in the near future?
A.
God continuing to use and grow La Mision Hispana to reach Hispanics and plant additional churches in this area.
