Our Senior Pastor--Jeff Keaton
Q. When did you come to Parkway and what events led you here?
A. God led our family to Parkway in September 2000. We had no plans to leave our church in Hollywood, Florida but after receiving a call from Steve Parker (Former Pastor at Parkway) God overwhelmed us with a sense that we needed to consider moving to Parkway. It was an extremely difficult decision because of our great love and connection to the people in Hollywood but God made His will so clear we could do nothing but accept the call to Virginia.
Q. Where have you come from? What are some of your previous ministry experiences?
A. I was privileged to be raised in a great Christian Home. My father was a pastor, bible college president, camp meeting evangelist, etc. My mother gave birth to nine children and she spent most of her time trying to raise all of us to know and love the Lord. Eight of the nine kids in our family have been called into Christian Ministry. I attended Hobe Sound Bible College and graduated from the Pastoral Ministry Degree Program. I spent several years doing public relations work and singing in P.R. groups for both Union Bible College (High School) and HSBC (College). I took my first church in Hollywood, Fl in 1992. God restored life to a struggling little church and we saw scores of people saved and delivered from lives of deep sin. Winning lost people to Jesus became the dominant theme of my ministry as I grew and developed as a Pastor in Hollywood.
Q. Tell us about your family.
A. I married my H.S. sweetheart, Michele Neese, on August 1, 1987. We have been blessed with two daughters, Julianna 93' and Heidi 96'. They are the joy of our lives. Julianna is our athletic daughter. She scored 32 points this year as she played for the Parkway Girl's Varsity team. Julianna is rapidly learning how to play an acoustic guitar. Heidi is our "girl". She loves to dress up, curl her hair and work with all kinds of crafts. Heidi loves to play the piano and is learning about one new song every week.
Q. What are your major responsibilities at Parkway? (Tell us what you do).
A. I am the Senior Pastor and Chairman of the Board here at Parkway. This means I oversee all the ministries including Parkway Christian Academy. I have been blessed with a great team of pastors and leaders who carry a great deal of the responsibility.
Q. What excites you most about your ongoing ministry here?
A. I guess the things that excite me most about the ministry here are the "new things". I love to work with new people. I have taken about 450 people through our Intro to Parkway Class over the last four years. I love this class. I love to see new people come to Christ. I love the vision part of my ministry. I often see out ahead and begin to plan for new church plants; expansion in Parkway Christian Academy or expansion in the ministry of the church. New things keep me rolling.
Q. Name one highlight over the past five years. Your favorite Parkway moment.
A. They are starting to pile up. From our church plant send off services to our first ever PCA graduation. God has given us many great moments. I anticipate many more great highlights ahead.
Q. What are your hobbies/interests? What are some things you especially like to do in your free time?
A. I guess my hobby would be, "Being a Sports and Politics buff". I like to follow sports and I like to keep my finger on the political climate.
Q. What is your favorite food?
A. My friends make fun of my simple food taste. You will rarely catch me in a fancy restaurant. Anything, country, American. Cracker Barrel is my favorite place to eat.
Q. What book(s) have you read recently that you'd like to recommend. Do you have a favorite book?
A. One of my favorite books is "Prayer" by Richard Foster. It changed my approach to praying. Another book that I have recently read is "How Now Shall We Live" by Chuck Colsen. This book will enlighten you to the worldview struggle that our culture is facing.
Q. What do you anticipate in the near future?
A. I am just along for the ride with God. I'm anxious to see where He's going to take our church planting efforts. God has just given me a new vision to build a tuition free Christian school system in the Roanoke Valley. This vision is so big that only God could possibly make it a reality. I believe He is going to help us fulfill this vision.
